Are you sick and tired of all the pre-made and pre-packaged food at the grocery store filled with unnecessary, and sometimes mysterious, ingredients? There are so many items that we typically grab at the store instead of just as easily making them at home, especially when it comes to breakfast options.

Sure, you may be intimidated by the amount of time and complexity involved in making these foods yourself, but you will discover how these quick, easy recipes can help you and your children eat healthier for less money in most cases. Even when it is more expensive to make something from scratch, the benefit of knowing what is in the food you are putting on the table for your family is well worth the effort. Plus, a huge bonus to making healthy food at home is the experience you will share with your children in the kitchen as you work together.

Try making some of the following healthy organic breakfasts from scratch with your kids. You will help your children stay healthy and protect the environment from harmful chemicals by choosing organic food options.

Cheese and Yogurt

Making your own dairy products might seem like something you are not equipped to do in your own kitchen, however, there is one type of cheese that is easy for anyone to make: soft cheese. You can make cheeses like ricotta and paneer by using only a couple of ingredients including organic milk and something acidic to split the curds from the whey, such as lemon juice or vinegar. You can also try making your own yogurt. We suggest purchasing a yogurt maker to simplify the process. You can then use the yogurt to whip up some delicious smoothies for your picky eaters.

Bread

Did you know that the reason bread lasts so long is that it contains preservatives that may not be the healthiest choice? The best way to ensure that you are getting fresh, natural bread is to make it yourself. This way, you will have control over all the ingredients.

Many people are intimidated by the idea of making their own bread, but it will be simple if you use a Zojirushi automatic bread maker. When you use a bread maker, you can just add in all the ingredients and it will automatically go through the steps. From mixing to kneading, proving, and baking, everything is taken care of for you. Choose organic yeast, flour, and sugar to make your bread.

Bread is part of a well-balanced breakfast for our kids, and it also provides some important health benefits. Whole grains like bread can boost serotonin levels in our brain, which help us relax and calm down. They also stabilize blood sugar, improving anxiety symptoms since low blood sugar can make us feel anxious.

Jelly and Jam

People have been making their own jellies, jams, and preserves for a very long time. It might seem complicated, but it is really easy to do. The trickiest part is getting the right set on your jelly or jam. The two main elements for this are boiling it to its setting point and having enough pectin. A good thermometer will help you get your mixture to its setting point. Pectin occurs naturally in some fruits and helps jellies and jams to set. However, you can also use jam sugar to add extra pectin to your creations. Put your jelly and jam in sealed, sterilized jars and it can last for months.

To ensure that your jelly or jam is organic, choose fruit like strawberries or blueberries at the grocery store containing the organic label. You can make this an even more meaningful experience for your kids by going to an organic or pesticide-free farm to pick your own fruit to turn into jelly. Your children will love being part of the process from start to finish–from picking the fruit to spreading the jam on their bread in the morning for a tasty breakfast.

Nut Butters

For children who are not allergic to nuts, nut butter is a delicious part of a healthy breakfast. Even kids who are unable to eat peanuts might have better luck with butters made from almonds, hazelnuts, or other types of nuts. Or you can try sunflower seeds or pumpkin seeds. Your kids will love spreading nut butter on bread or apple slices, mixing it in with yogurt, or adding it into a refreshing breakfast smoothie.

You no longer need to buy nut butters in the store because they are so easy to make at home. All you need is a blender with strong blades capable of blitzing your nuts. You can buy a special nut butter maker, but it is not necessary. Making nut butter is so simple because you only need one ingredient–nuts. Do not add water or oil because the nuts already contain their own natural oils.

What are your family’s favorite DIY organic breakfast recipes?
