How To Encourage Your Kids To Express Themselves Creatively With Crafts

January 9, 2017 by Sandi Schwartz 6 Comments

craft ideas for kidsHow often do your kids express themselves creatively? One of the best ways to encourage your kids to do this is through arts and crafts. Why? Well, arts and crafts allow your kids to be mindful, or in the moment. They can feel free to express themselves and are able to develop mentally, socially, and emotionally. Creativity also helps them develop confidence! Want to know how you can help your kids to get to this stage? Check out these tips for inspiring creativity in your children.

Let Your Child’s Work Be Enough

It is important to let your child’s work be enough. When they present their work to you, resist the urge to suggest that they add or change something. Don’t ever make them feel like their creation isn’t good enough, even if all they did was draw a dot on the page. If they are happy with it, that’s all that really matters.

Explore Their Process, Ask About Feelings

Getting involved in your child’s arts and crafts can be tricky. You want to show an interest without stressing them out and making them think that they need to impress you. Aim to explore their process and ask about their feelings. How did they feel when making their project? Try to encourage them to follow the emotions that make them feel great. Just be careful to avoid giving them meaningless compliments that turn them into people who are simply seeking praise from others to feel good about themselves.

Talk About It More Specifically - Leave General Comments Out of It

If you are going to talk about your child’s creation with them, make sure you talk about it in specifics. Leave the general comments behind. So, let’s say they have used a lot of one particular color. Take an interest by asking them what made them use so much of that color. If you’re going to give them a compliment, use your own feelings and continue being specific. Instead of saying, ‘that’s really good, you’re so talented!’, tell them ‘I love all of the green you used in this picture!’.

Avoid Giving Direction

If you can help it, avoid giving your children direction. They create best when they are given the supplies they need and are left to their imagination. Buying kits for them to use can be fun, but they can come with instructions that prevent your kids from fully expressing themselves creatively. Allow them to develop their own ideas.

Don’t Ask Too Many Questions

You have to remember that kids think differently than adults. While they are creating, avoid asking too many questions. For instance, don’t ask them, ‘what’s that? Is that a house?’. Kids don’t necessarily associate their creation with anything that you understand. It can actually confuse them. Allow them to create whatever they want, whether it makes ‘sense’ or not.

Prepare For Mess

The worst thing you can do is hover over your kids, cleaning up as they go and asking them not to make such a mess. You should prepare for mess if you want your kids to express themselves creatively. Put an old blanket down or lots of newspaper. You can even let them do their project outside if the weather cooperates. You definitely don’t want to stress your kids out about their mess.

Encourage Kids To Develop Their Own Style

To encourage your kids to express themselves creatively through crafts, and just about anything in life, it is a good idea to get them to develop their own style. One way you can do this is by allowing them to choose their own clothing. Even really young children can pick out what they want to wear. They might come up with some crazy combinations, but it gives them confidence and a way to develop their own personal style. It’s so beneficial to their overall growth! At the very least, give them a choice.

Have Plenty Of Craft Supplies Available For Them

It’s crucial that you have plenty of craft supplies available for your kids if you want them to express themselves creatively. If your child wants to try out a specific hobby, you may need items that are not listed here. If they want to start making stuffed animals, for instance, you may need to invest in a sewing machine for them. Make sure you read reviews before buying anything for them to ensure the products are suitable for their age and experience level. You can click here to get an idea of what to do. The important thing is that you nurture their creativity as best you can!

My girls love it whenever we do a craft project together. The biggest challenge is making sure that the supplies are safe for their baby brother. This definitely makes me want to pull the craft supplies out more often with them. Thanks so much for the inspiration!

I love my craft cabinet. It’s full of 2 dollar craft kits from target, construction paper, crayons, paints, stickers, pipe cleaners, beads, and oh so much more messy fun!

My niece loves to draw and paint and we always complement her on her work. It’s often pictures of family members with sweet words of love on them. I love it.

These are great ideas! It is very hard not to comment while they’re making something. It’s especially hard for me not to care about the mess, so thanks for the encouragement.
