Get Silly With Creative Activities This Winter

Creative Activities

When days are short and the weather is cold, you might be spending more time indoors with your children. Keep them stimulated with these fun creative activities they will be sure to love. They will help stave off boredom and keep the whole family feeling sharp and engaged in the winter months.

Unleash Your Inner Architects

You probably already have pulled out the arts and crafts box this season to keep your kids occupied. Have you thought about adding a bit more structure to their creative designs? An enjoyable exercise to help boost creative thinking is to let your kids design their own structures, whether it’s a fanciful castle with a moat or new equipment for the play park. All you’ll need is some graph paper and pencils to get started. You can move on to 3D models using everyday objects, and let them get those creative ideas flowing!

Take Dress-Up To The Next Level

A sure-fire way to spend a rainy day is by pulling out your box of fun fancy dress costumes. You can inspire greater creativity by working these into a story of your own. Get the whole family involved in writing a script and making up new characters based on the costumes. For example, if you have a cape and wand in your dress-up box, you could start making up your own superhero powers. Don’t let the kids have all the fun-pull out your own costume jewelry or pick up some funny adult fancy dress costumes from Funidelia to create your own characters!

Lights, Camera, Action!

With characters and costumes, you’ll be ready to put together your own unique production. Older kids will be able to operate camera equipment to help film and edit a family TV show, or you could build a simple set and perform short plays for one another. Another fun idea is to dress up and lip sync to your favorite songs to create a music video.

Get Physical

There are lots of ways to get your brain thinking creatively, but did you know that moving your body can also have an impact on your brain? Studies show that aerobic exercise can help boost creativity, by moving ideas from the subconscious to your current awareness. It also helps to burn off a bit of excess energy during the winter months. If it’s too cold to get the family outdoors, you could always put on a dance video and do it together to get your creative juices flowing.

Try Switching Hands For Everyday Tasks

Finally, here’s a simple idea to get creative. If your children normally use their right hand for tasks, ask them to try switching to their left hand once in a while. This helps activate both hemispheres of the brain, creating a new dialogue between the right and left hemispheres and unlocking new ideas. You don’t have to be too complicated with this one. They can try eating or drawing portraits of each other with their weak hand. At the very least, the results could be entertaining and make for a hilarious indoor activity.

Creative thinking education involves so much more than classroom activities. Flexing your creative muscles at home offers a multitude of benefits for family members of all ages!

What silly creative activities have you tried with your kids?

Great ways to change up what might have been a boring winter break from school. My daughters will love the idea of writing a script and putting on a play!

Love this! I don’t have kids yet, but my friends do so I always feel the need to come up with fun ideas or things to do with them! Excited to bring dress up to their homes!

I’ve posted about this before too! It’s tough to keep kiddos entertained when stuck indoors!!

These are great ideas. I really love the super creative idea of using the non-dominant hand - smart!!

Love getting busy, and so true. When I am more active, I am more creative! Time to pull out the Wii Fit I suppose. 😉

The only indoor activity I really have to share is my geography map. 🙂 We had great fun locating Mickey Mouse, NASA, and Captain America, an then comparing the distances from our home. 🙂

I’m really wanting a GoPro for filming. This would be a great way to use it as well. Great ideas.

My kids wear costumes daily because they want to and I don’t have the energy to argue about it. If Superman wants to go to the grocery store then fine .
