When we take things for granted, we can struggle with issues like sadness, disappointment, and anxiety. Fortunately, science tells us that practicing gratitude can change our perspective of how we see the world. By teaching our children to have an attitude of gratitude, they will be able to more successfully maneuver through life’s ups and downs. Here are a few effective ways to bring more gratitude into your family’s life throughout the year.

Don’t Give In To All Of Their Wants

Sometimes as a parent it is a lot easier to give in to the whining and fussing that children can do when they want to have something purchased for them. Countless parents have reached a point where they simply give in and make the purchase for the child just to get them to settle down. However, it’s best to avoid doing this too much. Children who consistently get what they want without having to are simply not happy in the long run.

Encourage Them To Give Back To The Community

Giving back to others is a great way for kids to show gratitude and to understand that there are others who may have less than they do. Giving back is very rewarding in its own way, and it is something that can get the whole family involved. It can have a real impact while teaching a meaningful lesson at the same time. Send Cards To Express Gratitude

Cards that express thanks are a failsafe way to show someone gratitude. Reminding children to send thank you cards when appropriate is a lovely way to make a habit that they can carry into adulthood. Give children the freedom to pick out their own cards as a way to make them more aware of the thoughts and feelings behind such a gesture. They will also be happy to put their own spin or personality into the card in a creative way.

Learn From Those Older Than Them

We can all stand to learn more from those who are older than ourselves. There is a lot to gain from past successes and failures in life. Role modeling is a very big deal for younger children in particular. They want to see those who are older than them that they can look up to and admire.

Look For A Positive Spin On Any Situation

It is best to try to teach children about finding a silver lining in any scenario that happens. Bad things can happen at any time and it is easy to see things from a pessimistic point of view. Adults do it all the time, and it is not uncommon for children to feel the same way. It is always best to try to look at things from another point of view if at all possible. Not only does this make it easier to handle stressful moments in life, but it also helps kids to develop the emotional intelligence needed to navigate many facets of life. Changing the way that we look at any given scenario can be helpful for teaching all of us how to be a little more grateful for the life that we have.

[…] Instead, a good way to connect with your child when they make a mistake and are facing a natural consequence is to show empathy and understanding, and you’ll get gratitude from them instead of attitude! […]
