If you have been following shelter in place guidelines as a response to the coronavirus, you have probably been confined to your home for the past two months or longer. At this point, the days seem to be running together and time might feel like it’s somehow speeding up and slowing down at the same time.
Other than working, completing household chores, and tending to the needs of your children, your days have likely become nothing more than binge-watching television and movies while gorging on comfort foods (with a nap or two in between) to manage your stress.
In the beginning, it might have been nice to catch up on some sleep, watch your favorite shows, and lounge around the house. Yet, after a while, it can get quite boring. Boredom can dredge up feelings of loneliness, depression, and anxiety. To break up the monotony and fight off boredom, try to find some creative ways to spend your time as a family while stuck at home.
Start A Garden
There is no rule or restriction that keeps you from venturing outside to your backyard. Starting a garden is a creative and productive way to spend your time during the lockdown. A garden improves the aesthetic appeal of your home, it helps to boost your mood, it’s a wonderful form of exercise. And, if you plant vegetables and fruit, it’s also a clever way to ensure you provide healthy nourishment for your family.
Writing is a creative source of expression that can be very therapeutic during uncertain times. Whether you prefer to write poetry, create short stories, or start a blog or your first novel, it’s a constructive way to spend your time. Not only is it a healthy way for you to express your innermost thoughts and feelings, but if you choose to share your stories, you can also touch and help the lives of others. Who knows? Perhaps being a writer is a calling that can be turned into a lucrative business. Get your kids involved, too. Introduce them to some calming nature poetry and other writing tools to get their creative juices flowing.
Make Plans For Your Future
The here and now may be a bit blurry as the coronavirus continues to disturb lives around the world, but that doesn’t mean you can’t plan for a brighter future. Now is a magnificent time to focus on your future. Do you plan on getting married soon? Why not take advantage of offers for free wedding websites and begin planning out some minor details of your special day? Are you expecting a little bundle of joy? Spend some time designing and shopping online for the nursery. Maybe you want to buy a house or take a vacation. Then start working on the steps necessary to accomplish these important goals.
Spend Time Together
Being in the house with each other 24/7 is not the same as spending quality time together. Chances are everyone is sticking to an area of the home they find most comfortable. The kids are in their room watching television or playing video games, teenagers are listening to music or socializing with their friends on social media, and the parents are either tending to household chores or completing work from their home office.
It is during these times that families need to come together. Make time each day to spend quality moments with one another. Remove all distractions and find activities to do that everyone can enjoy. Grab the projector and a blanket and have a relaxing movie night under the stars, pull out the puzzles and board games, complete an arts and crafts project together, or run around and play in the land of make believe and explore with your kids.
After several weeks of being at home with nothing much to do but worry, boredom quickly settles in. As being bored can lead to a multitude of emotional problems and ineffective decisions, it’s important to find something to break up the monotony. Creative ideas, such as those described above, can give you something to focus on that can lift your spirits while passing the time.
How are you spending your time in a positive way?
