Music is such a large part of our children’s lives, affecting their mood and providing a way to relieve stress and anxiety. Music is also known to help children learn more effectively. According to Chris Boyd Brewer’s research, music can enhance education in the classroom at all levels in the following ways:
- Establish a positive learning state
- Release tension
- Enhance creativity and imagination
- Focus concentration
- Improve memory
- Facilitate a multisensory learning experience
- Add an element of fun
One of the best ways that music helps children learn is by making it easier to grasp and remember new concepts. Electronic resources, like apps, are great ways to teach children through music. My four-year-old daughter has been enjoying the Kidloland app over the past few months. It is an incredible example of an effective music-based learning tool.
Why We Recommend Kidloland For Music-Based Learning
Kidloland is a fun-filled educational app for toddlers and preschoolers that my daughter can’t get enough of. When I asked her about it earlier this week, she proclaimed that it is her favorite app to use on her iPad.
Why are kids so excited about this program? Probably because of the endless learning options on this app–it has over 245 rhymes and songs and more than 100 activities for kids to learn nursery rhymes, colors, shapes, numbers, letters, and first words. What’s really amazing is that Kidloland will keep adding more songs, stories, activities, and games each month so our children will have something new to discover every time they log in.
Kidloland offers so many ways to approach learning. Some of the different learning techniques include sorting, matching, solving puzzles, counting, and connecting the dots. You can choose from a multitude of topics based on your child’s interests, such as animals, food, vehicles, outer space, farms, or cities. They also provide a variety of ways to learn the material: ABC songs, phonics, stories, games, and lullabies.
Music is part of each learning experience that your child chooses on Kidloland. Sometimes the music is simply playing in the background to provide a type of atmosphere or to encourage a specific emotion. Other times the music is the learning tool itself. For example, in the month section there are clever songs about each month so that children can easily remember facts about them. Finally, there is even a playlist feature so you can program the app to play up to 25 Kidloland songs in a row.
My daughter loves how each activity has a story that she can interact with just by touching the screen. By playing on the app, children can improve their hand-eye coordination. The backgrounds and characters are very colorful and friendly, so they really attract the children’s attention. She also enjoys the verbal feedback that the program provides when she completes a task correctly.
The new stories section is one of the most advanced part of the app. It offers 20 stories in categories including bedtime, animals, and fables. We love this feature because my daughter can choose to have the story read to her or we can read it together. It is a great tool for young readers to learn how to read, either independently or with a parent. As each word is read aloud by a friendly, soothing narrator on the app, it is highlighted so that children can begin to recognize more words each time they use Kidloland. Eventually, she will be able to read these stories on her own. We also love the beautiful music that accompanies each story.
According to the Johns Hopkins article, “Music can be used to help us remember learning experiences and information. In active learning experiences music creates a soundtrack for a learning activity. The soundtrack increases interest and activates the information mentally, physically, or emotionally. Music can also create a highly focused learning state in which vocabulary and reading material is absorbed at a great rate. When information is put to rhythm and rhyme these musical elements will provide a hook for recall.” Kidloland achieves these learning goals, and I am so excited for my daughter to continue to develop her math, reading, and other skills using this app. I think this app is a great enhancement to her pre-school education.
