We join the journey of a young boy named Caleb who moves to an island where he is first lonely, but then meets new friends including the Rainbow Bird that appears in various colors as the story progresses.
The Rainbow Bird offers a deep level of symbolism. It changes color–from red to orange to yellow to green to blue to indigo to violet–to represent the energy centers in and around our body based on the chakra system. The author uses color to teach children how to be empowered to open their energy force and live a life filled with happiness. The Rainbow Bird serves as Caleb’s guide (and our guide as well) through different levels of life based on our chakras.
Caleb also comes across a talking tree that tells him, “Caleb, find your answer inside you. Take a deep breath and look into your heart. Trust and you will know.” He is instilling confidence in Caleb that he has the power within himself to listen to what he desires. He then spends time on a see-saw with a friend and learns about staying balanced. This is such an important concept for us to discuss with our children, as life gets stressful and hectic at times.
Next, Caleb swims in the refreshing ocean and meets an octopus who first seems like a bully but then wants to be his friend. The Rainbow Bird explains that we are all connected by love. The octopus tells Caleb, “This is how life goes…we grow apart sometimes and come together again.” We then find Caleb in a treehouse looking out in awe to the vastness of the world around him. He is moved by this moment and feels peace and power within himself, and connected to his surroundings.
I won’t tell you how the story ends (find out yourself here), but I will tell you that this book offers many opportunities for meaningful discussion with our children. We learn about self love, taking control of our own life, friendship, confidence, reaching our goals, and enjoying a lifetime of unlimited possibilities.
What Are Chakras?
According to the Chopra Center, chakra is a sanskrit word that refers to the wheels of energy throughout the body. The chakra system originated in India between 1500 – 500 B.C. There are seven chakras located from the base of the spine to the crown of the head.
Each chakra is an energy center that spins like a wheel. If it spins too fast, that chakra becomes too open. Sometimes the wheel spins too slow, or not at all, which means that it is too closed. According to this philosophy, in order for us to have maximum health and a balanced life all chakras need to be in balance.
When one chakra is out of balance it affects all of the chakras. Balancing and aligning the chakras is a work in progress as we face daily challenges such as stress, emotions, fatigue, and illness that impact specific chakras. Meditation, yoga, crystal healing, affirmations, mindfulness, and other practices can help bring the chakra system back into balance.
There are seven main chakras: the root, sacral, solar plexus, heart, throat, third eye, and crown. The chart below explains what each chakra represents.
Chakra Activities For Kids
Children love working with the chakras since they are body-based and associated with colors, nature, sounds, and visualizations. The following activities are a great way to continue learning about the lessons found in The Magical Rainbow.
